Another Africa

It is my pleasure to introduce the Another Africa online magazine and K.L.V. collaboration which was something born from our mutual interest in Africa, adornment, art and, in my case particularly, animalia. The door which lead to our expansive research into these realms was the idea of 'Masquerade' or 'Panto mimicry' and you certainly can't think of African Masquerade without thinking Phyllis Galembo. With this basis we delved deeper into the rich and seemingly unending world of art of the guise, both in historical applications and its use in contemporary practice, resulting in the three projects we present to you. Disguise, Diptique and Adornate.

disGUISE is a pop up blog curated by Another Africa and K.L.V., its purpose is to present and consume viewers with the world wide and deeply historic act of disguise in its strikingly diverse forms. From rural Germany to the catwalks and back to our African masquerade starting point, with everything from theatre, eco friendly headwear and all aspects of the avant-garde in between. Our extensive collection of masked imagery will be uploaded through the month of April, painting day by the day the overall picture and notion of the mask in relation to anthropology.

Diptique

After our broad look at the unified use of the mask worldwide, we returned to our starting point in Africa and to our original source of inspiration - masquerade. This part of the collaboration looks at African masquerade as an influence on the arts and fashion in the form of diptychs, juxtaposing one image with another focusing on both the complementary and the contrast. These shall have a staggered release throughout April.

Adornate

After accumulating so much inspirational material, Another Africa and K.L.V. collaborated on a series of adorned headwear which resonate with the themes explored in 'Diptique' and 'disGUISE'. Missla Libsekal, founder of Another Africa, acted as model for the headwear designed by K.L.V. As with 'Diptique', the release of this imagery will be throughout April.
