Though I haven't actually seen many theatre productions at all, I found The Lion King to be incredible! I was quite young when I saw it, around the time it first came out actually, and I remember Mum taking me on a coach trip up to the Lyceum in London as a surprise due to my love of The Lion King as a child (which remains today). As the pictures below demonstrate, the costumes are so intricately detailed with countless rows of beads and other such adornments and therefore deserve the exhibition space they've been given to enable a closer look. The first appearance of the Julie Taymor designed costumes, both were in 2010, was at the V&A Museum where only two outfits were on display, that of the characters Scar and Sarabi. The second appearance was in the the National Geographic shop but this featured a much larger selection of beautifully produced headdresses and apparel which of course draws inspiration from the African continent, without mimicking a particular culture according to Taymor herself. One of my favourites is the Rafiki costume with the obvious shamanistic influences that I find incredibly alluring, however there isn't a costume design I don't like as all have the earthy and animalistic yet somewhat bizarre qualities that fit my taste. I should also point out how the designs are created to work harmoniously with the human body to extend in shape and create the illusion of another creature, something I find very interesting. I would definitely see it again should the opportunity arise as I was quite young at the time!
