The Monarch and the Feathers

With the EjectorSeat Arts Festival coming around fast, I've began to construct my idea for my personal installation to be shown on the day. The idea came to me after remembering the migration and hibernation of the Monarch butterfly which has been depicted brilliantly in the David Attenborough presented 'Life' series. I shall be mimicking the way in which these butterflies completely cover the trees yet my butterflies will be made from paper to signify their fragility in light of recent man-made threats to the species. I won't try to stop anyone from taking the butterflies away as this further acts as a metaphor of the impact we have on these creatures. So far I've only cut out around 80 and though they are reasonably sized I will probably need another 900! Here are my butterflies, the Monarchs and a clip from the program that inspired me.

The other day after a bargain £4 Bella Italia meal with my friend Somali, she gave me a bag full of feathers that she'd acquired during her stay on the Isle of Wight (quite ironic seeing as I'm the one who comes from there) from the Seaview Wildlife Experience in particular. So far I've only made one necklace but from some of the biggest feathers so it's quite a statement! I also photographed a selection of other feathers that are now ready for jewellery and headdresses!
