Kakapo & Kagu

Here are two more collages made today, coincidentally both flightless birds beginning with K! The Kagu or 'Ghost of the Forest' is the only existing species in its family with no strong links to other bird families, making it a very unique creature indeed. Coming from New Caledonia it is very much at risk from introduced species and deforestation, this has resulted in its endangered status. The Kakapo suffers similar issues as it evolved in New Zealand where natural predators and food abundance eradicated the need for flight, however Europeans brought an array of predators with them causing the world's only flightless parrot to become critically endangered.

Swan & Finch

After buying a brilliant bird book in a charity shop I've now decided to put it to use, in my usual manner of course. Though I've collaged various animals together onto human bodies before, the idea this time is to focus on birds and to form high fashion looks with the qualities of particular species or families so that the collages embody the shape, colour and texture of the creatures. Swan and Finch are what I have so far..

Stone, Lace & Antler

It's been a while since I'd made any collages, hand made or digital, but some recent photos have brought the inspiration back! Today I visited the New Forest and after some crab fishing and sunbathing, my friend Nikki was buried underneath the pebble beach with only her face emerging. The second image is compiled of photos where I was experimenting with some lace offcuts given to me, in the hope to create some kind of shroud/headdress/mask. Lastly are the antlers that appeared in a previous post, this time manipulated digitally.

Rosanna Webster

The projections and collages of Rosanna Webster do make me think 'I wish I'd done that' as though the style is not so dissimilar to mine, the work has taken a slightly different direction and it really makes me want to experiment! Another artist interested in the animal, tribal, anthropology and nature relationship is what I like to see!

"A series of images in response to primitive beliefs in a fluidity between human and animal forms, and therianthropes. In many early hunter gatherer societies animals were seen as messengers between worlds with costumes and ritual used to aid spiritual practice. The images here were inspired by the idea that through animal costume and imitation spiritual transgression could occur."

Bleeding Ink

The other day I was digging through some old sketchbooks and came across my old acetone/nail varnish remover experiments from uni. Most of the images are collages that I've photocopied and either scratched into or brushed over with acetone and other various chemicals, producing a range of tones and colours with the distortion in some cases.

Using some old photos on my harddrive and an acetone printed face, I created a kind of jellyfish headdress which I plan to expand on eventually.
