Despite being interested in widening my search for music, I have overlooked that from the many Central and South American countries for quite some time so have decided to blog about this topic.
Mexico
I discovered the first two videos that I've posted below through film. In 'Frida', Costa Rican born Chavela Vargas sings, in what became for me, one of the most memorable parts of the film. Chavela Vargas has been described as the 'rough voice of tenderness' and supposedly had a relationship with Frida Kahlo, who the film is based on. I particularly love the menacing mask that approaches Frida early in the video. Beneath that is the music from a scene in 'Babel', as various characters cross the border into Mexico.
Peru
Conjunto Condemayta De Acomayo is a folkloric band that I discovered thanks to the Sublime Frequencies music label. I only have two of their songs and although they're both similar, the female vocals accompanied by the delicate harp like instrument and the distinctive harmonica really appeal to me. The first video posted below is of a Peruvian perfomance, set to the music of Conjunto Condemayta De Acomayo and Lucila Campos, who I discovered thanks to Last.fm and the album Afro-Peruvian Classics: The Soul of Black Peru. This is followed by a video of Conjunto Condemayta De Acomayo performing at Maccu Picchu, take notice of their outfits as I think they're great.
